Scania presents new monitoring features on its industrial and marine engines The best way to obtain maximum performance and the best operating economy from an engine is to constantly monitoring of important engine data. Scania is now introducing a Scania instrumentation to help the customer along. The new instrumentation is especially designed for Scania's engines equipped with Scania EMS (Engine Management System). EMS has the ability to provide the user with all the necessary data to achieve maximum performance and the best operating economy and the instrumentation helps to visualize them. The instrumentation consists of three components: · Control panel · Instrument panel · Scania EMS display The control panel is separate which makes it possible to install dual sets of instruments and it allows customers to combine analogue and digital instruments in a way that best suits their needs. With the control panel, you can also activate two pre-programmed rev settings - on-board a boat for winch and trawl operation and in construction machines for PTO and crane operation, for instance. The control panel also has a limp-home accelerator function, so you can get home even if there is a problem with the electrical system. The instrument panel consists of standard analogue instruments such as rev counter, oil temperature, and oil pressure. Trip computer The Scania EMS display is in principle a trip computer which, in addition to data presentation, also features monitoring, programming of engine parameters, storage of engine data, alarm activation and trouble- shooting with suggestions for corrective measures. It is possible to supervise momentary and average fuel consumption and average power as well as to get a list of engine speed, oil pressure, turbo pressure, cooling temperature and engine torque since the last reset. Statistics that show, for instance, running time, average fuel consumption and total fuel consumption since the last reset are also available. Improved operating economy "The digital solution is excellent for finding optimum operating conditions irrespective of weather and current load," says Mr Yngve Skog, Sales Manager at Scania Industrial & Marine Engines. "And that goes for both marine and industrial applications. "Being able to constantly monitor engine load, throttle setting and fuel consumption contributes to considerably improved operating economy." The diagnostic system included in Scania EMS continuously monitors the engine to ensure that any problems are detected as soon as possible. If a problem is found, an error code is displayed. The code indicates which control unit is affected, how the system behaved when the error occured and how many times it has happened. The system can also be programmed to sound an alarm at specific levels - if the oil pressure drops or if the temperature rises above a certain point, for example. "Getting an early warning is an important feature for maximising up- time," explains Mr Skog. "The earlier a fault is detected and identified, the sooner it can be fixed and the sooner you will be up and running again." Another major benefit is that the customer himself can program the engine's parameters directly in Scania EMS, as well as the levels or limits that should apply when the alarm is activated.
