50 trucks to a new customer in South Africa Scania's market share increases to almost 15 per cent South African truck operator GS Fouche Vervoer has purchased 50 new Scania trucks. The contract, worth just over 50 million kronor and one of the largest truck deals in South Africa this year, marks the ongoing climb of Scania's market share despite the continued shrinking of the South African truck market. "It is particularly encouraging to note that Scania has continued to expand its operations in South Africa for more than half a year now," says Jan Jarlhage, President of Scania South Africa Pty Ltd. "Scania's market share after the first three months of 1999 is now approaching 15 per cent, making us the third-largest truck brand here among the 12 competitors in the heavy segment. " GS Fouche Vervoer is based in the north-western part of South Africa but operates throughout the country. With the purchase of the latest batch of 50 Scania trucks - all 360 or 530 hp V8 models - the company is doubling its truck fleet. George Fouche says: "In the face of stern competition, Scania secured the contract on the grounds of its immense safety, both for the driver and other road users, combined with unbeatable fuel economy. "What was decisive, however, was the availability of the Scania service and maintenance contract which utilises the facilities of our own workshops. In addition, we have access to Scania's comprehensive network of service points throughout South Africa." For more information, please contact Bo Östlund, telephone +46 8 553 82846.
