Scania has won the Improver of the Year award, presented by the editors of the business pages at the Stockholm newspaper Svenska Dagbladet as part of the annual Kompetensgalan gathering in Stockholm.

The prize is awarded to a company that has clearly improved its environmental, social and business-ethical activities during the past year.

“This award is an acknowledgement of the systematic and long-term efforts of the entire Scania organisation. The daily contributions and basic values of every employee is what makes the difference,” says Cecilia Edström, Senior Vice President Corporate Relations.
Scania integrates concern for the environment throughout its operations: in product development and production, in its relations with suppliers and in sales and service operations.

Scania is also the only truck manufacturer that produces entirely ethanol-powered bus engines.

In recent years, Scania has worked to identify social risks in its operations and to develop tools and processes for managing these risks. The company has pilot-tested these tools in China to assess their suitability and effectiveness in a concrete way.

The above three areas were singled out especially by the prize jury.

Issues related to the environment and social responsibility are integrated into Scania’s operations and business priorities, and strategic decisions are made by the company’s Executive Board. Operative decisions are made within each line organisation.

“Our environmental improvement work is of direct benefit to the company and its employees, as well as to its shareholders. Environmental concern always has to rest on commerical grounds. If no one buys our products, we have achieved nothing,” Cecilia Edström concludes.
