17 February 1999 [REMOVED GRAPHICS] SCANIA YEAR-END REPORT JANUARY - DECEMBER 1998 "Scania's earnings in 1998 were clearly better than in 1997" RESULTS IN BRIEF Fourth quarter of 1998, compared to fourth quarter of 1997 -Number of trucks and buses sold: 13,922 (13,942). * -Sales: SEK 12,900 m. (11,531) [USD 1,599 m. (1,430)] , an increase of 12 percent. -Operating income in European operations: SEK 1,314 m. (838) [USD 163 m. (104)], equivalent to a margin of 12.7 (9.5) percent. -Operating income in Latin American operations: SEK -295 m. (68) [USD -37 m. (8)], including items affecting comparability amounting to SEK -100 m. (100) [USD - 12 m. (12)]. -Total operating income: SEK 1,102 m. (1,004) [USD 136 m. (124)], equivalent to a margin of 8.5 (8.7) percent. Full year 1998, compared to full year 1997 -Number of trucks and buses sold: 49,670 (46,976), an increase of 6 percent. -Sales: SEK 45,312 m. (39,719) [USD 5,618 m. (4,925)], an increase of 14 percent. -Sales of service-related products increased by 11 percent to SEK 6,282 m. (5,649) [USD 779 m. (700)]. -Operating income: SEK 3,592 m. (3,047) [USD 446 m. (378)], an increase of 18 percent, equivalent to a margin of 7.9 (7.7) percent. -Income after financial items: SEK 3,214 m. (2,751) [USD 399 m. (341)]. -Net income: SEK 2,250 m. (1,943) [USD 279 m. (241)]. ** -Earnings per share: SEK 11.25 (9.70) [USD 1.40 (1.20)]. -Earnings per share according to U.S. GAAP: SEK 11.20 (11.10) [USD 1.39 (1.38)]. -Proposed dividend for 1998: SEK 6.50 (5.50) [USD 0.81 (0.68)] per share. THE MARKET IN BRIEF Fourth quarter of 1998, compared to fourth quarter of 1997 -Order bookings for heavy trucks in western European markets rose by 10 percent. -Order bookings in Latin America fell substantially. Full year 1998, compared to full year 1997 -Order bookings for heavy trucks in western European markets rose by 13 percent. -Scania's market share for heavy trucks in western Europe was 15.2 (15.1) percent. -In Latin America, the number of trucks sold declined by 21 percent.
