• Holidaymakers should be aware of varying prices on ash cloud travel insurance • Comparing Ash Cloud Travel Insurance key to getting Best Deal & Cover • Comprehensive advice on choosing the right volcanic ash cloud travel insurance published The number of travellers searching for travel insurance to cover them against volcanic ash clouds and other natural disasters has increased in the wake of the Iceland volcanic eruption, but those looking for travel insurance are being urged by money saving website www.moneymaxim.co.uk to compare prices carefully in order to get the best deals as research shows the prices can vary enormously. Moneymaxims Managing Director, Mark Bower says; “Consumers are now able to protect themselves, to varying degrees and at widely different costs, against further volcanic disruption. There are policies on the market costing less than £10 for a week’s holiday in Europe, covering cancellation costs. But customers should research carefully before deciding which policy will best suit their needs.” Moneymaxim shows that three companies provide cancellation cover in the case of travellers being unable to leave the UK as a result of volcanic ash disruption: Its So Easy, World First and Direct Travel. A weeks cover in Europe including baggage and cancellation cover runs from £9.95 for a single adult under 49, and from £20 for a family of four. “While Its So Easy might be the cheapest for young single travellers to Europe, a 68 year old couple looking for a worldwide annual policy will find World First is more competitive, and for families it’s often Direct Travel!” For holidaymakers hoping to ensure they have the right level of cover, things get even more confusing when you take into account the upgrade policies on offer by insurers like Aviva and Columbus. These insurers offer ‘get you home cover’ enabling policyholders to jump on trains, hire cars or fly on alternative routes if they happen to get stuck abroad. The Aviva policy is based around airspace or ports being closed, whilst Columbus cover the wider risks of a carrier not getting passengers home, so customers are covered for strikes as well. “Whilst Aviva have decided to charge £5 per traveller on a single trip policy, and £10 on an annual policy, Columbus is offering their Emergency Travel upgrade for a flat £20 to cover everyone on a policy. That means that smaller parties tend to find Aviva more competitive, switching to Columbus for families and groups. “It is a confusing picture at the moment, partly as this is a new market, and firms are responding to it in different ways. No doubt a pattern will emerge as time goes on but until then we aim to keep our customers up to date with developments as they happen through our website.” To help travellers navigate the various options available, Moneymaxim has undertaken a comprehensive review of volcanic ash travel insurance policies and their findings are published at: www.moneymaxim.co.uk/volcanic-ash-cloud-insurance Notes: Mark Bower, Managing Director of www.moneymaxim.co.uk is available for interview as well as case studies.
