Semcon - Technical Partner for the Victory Challenge Team Semcon has been chosen as the official technical partner for the Victory Challenge Syndicate's entry in the America's Cup 2001/2002, with Jan Stenbeck as Chairman. In connection with developing and manufacturing Victory Challenge's competition boat in the America's Cup, Semcon will be participating as Structural Engineer/Hull, which means being in charge of calculating the dimensions of the hull. Semcon's specialist in the field of lightweight construction will be part of German Frers Jr's (the Chief Designer), design team. Semcon's R&D department will contribute to the Victory Challenge's efforts in gaining a place in the America's Cup. Together with German Frers Jr., lightweight construction specialists will calculate the dimensions that will lead to the optimal hull. The boat will be mainly built from carbon fibre, which places great demands on know-how in the field of composites, lightweights, and manufacturing. The correct combination of materials and manufacturing methods are crucial for the end result. "It's all about advanced product development projects, where there is an overall view and coordination between different technological areas," says Hans Johansson, Semcon's CEO. "In other words, just what Semcon's consultants work with every day for leading industrial companies, except a little more extreme!" "In connection with the last Whitbread tournament, Semcon was given the assignment from Team EF to help with developing and building the world's fastest sailing boat. And we succeeded," says Hans Johansson proudly. "This has meant that many of the large syndicates in the Volvo Ocean race (formerly the Whitbread Around the World Race) have been in touch with us. We have chosen to enter as the official IT consultants and technical partner to ASSA ABLOY's project, which we consider has the greatest chance of success."
