Gift to be Presented at Livermore Orchard Open House Celebration

LIVERMORE, Calif., May 28, 2014 - Orchard Supply Hardware® has announced a $2,000 gift to Fertile Groundworks, a charitable and educational nonprofit whose mission is to encourage, empower and teach communities to grow healthy, nutritious food. The donation will be a part of the Livermore Orchard Open House celebration on May 31, showcasing new improvements to the store located on 1450 First Street.

Customers are invited to line up in front of the store before the 6:30 a.m. festivities to receive Orchard Supply giveaways such as reusable bags and gift cards. The celebration will include a Board Cutting ceremony to officially open the store and the presentation of a Proclamation by Livermore Mayor John Marchand.

“Among the differences that customers will notice is just how open and inviting the store is now,” said Dennis Cleary, Orchard Supply Hardware Livermore manager. "With our new design format, we have aisles that form a  “racetrack” which go all the way around the store, new lighting and vibrant signage, making for a much easier and more convenient shopping experience.”

The redesign features an expanded paint department highlighting Orchard’s high quality Benjamin Moore™ paint selection and a new workbench offering services such as knife sharpening, rescreening, pipe threading and pipe, conduit, chain, cable and rope cutting.

According to Cleary, the most exciting improvement for customers will be the expanded nursery. The nursery was one of the smallest in the company but now it’s one of the largest, nearly doubling in square footage.

The upgrade is particularly exciting to Bruce Campbell, Alameda County Master Gardener and founder of Fertile Groundworks, whose Garden of Grace teaching garden focuses on educating the community about growing food organically.

The organization works with local soup kitchens and food pantries to provide a continuous flow of fresh, organic produce to help feed the hungry in the Tri-Valley region. The donation by Orchard Supply Hardware will help buy materials needed to keep the organic garden growing.

“Donations are the lifeblood that sustains us,” said Campbell. “A generous donation like this from Orchard will help us educate more people in schools and at our garden about the importance of organic produce, as well as help us feed the less fortunate here in our community.”

Richard Maltsbarger, Orchard’s president, commented, “We are proud of our roots in every community we serve, and very excited to partner with Fertile Groundworks and support the Garden of Grace program. It’s one more way we can work with our neighbors to make our community stronger.”
