SAN JOSE, Calif., May 28, 2014 Orchard Supply Hardware® is hosting an Open House for its newly remodeled home and garden retail store in San Rafael on May 31 at 6:30 a.m. The store, located at 1151 Andersen Street, showcases Orchard’s new neighborhood-style format that makes shopping easier and more enjoyable for customers.

“We’ve made this store better,” said Bill Selk, long-time manager for the Orchard Supply Hardware store in San Rafael, adding that “there have been improvements in every area.” More than 2,000 square feet have been added to the store, bringing the total to 33,750 square feet of indoor selling space. The remodel of the store has created a more open and light-filled interior with more of everything -- from an expanded assortment of electrical and plumbing fixtures to tools to Benjamin Moore™ paint to plants, seasonal items and patio furniture for the backyard enthusiast. Orchard has long been the destination for do-it-yourselfers, gardeners and barbecuers. Orchard’s customers are expressing delight in the changes.

For those needing assistance with basic household repairs, the store also offers a centralized customer-service area dubbed “The Workbench.” Here, Orchard associates, in keeping with their reputation for service, help with customer needs such as knife sharpening; rescreening; pipe threading; and pipe, conduit, chain or rope cutting.

As part of its commitment to the communities it serves, Orchard is proud to announce donations of $2,000 each to two San Rafael community organizations: the Canal Alliance and the Marin Master Gardeners. In addition to the usual festivities of the Open House that include give-aways of reusable bags and gift cards, representatives from each organization will be on hand to accept the donations.

“We’re pleased to support groups that do so much for their community,” says Richard Maltsbarger, Orchard’s President. “The work done by these groups makes a real difference in San Rafael and is in keeping with our Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program.”

“Canal Alliance is so happy to be partnering with Orchard Supply Hardware, which has been a fixture in the Canal neighborhood for many years,” said Dan Werner, Community Projects Specialist with Canal Alliance, a non-profit that helps low-income, Spanish-speaking immigrants acquire the tools they need to thrive. “Thanks to the generosity of Orchard, we will be able to continue working to improve the health and wellbeing of community members by providing them a place to grow fresh, organic fruits and vegetables and to develop social bonds in the Canal Community Garden.”

Volunteers with the Marin Master Gardeners program have created several demonstration gardens to be used for hands-on learning and public education through seminars and workshops.
