Serneke receives project assignments from Akademiska Hus for the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg
Serneke Construction has signed a collaboration agreement with Akademiska Hus for a new building at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. The building, of approximately 12,000 square meters, will be a closely collaborative project. The potential order value is estimated at around SEK 350 million. Implementing the project requires resolutions from the Board of Akademiska Hus as well as the necessary government resolutions.
Currently, the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg consists of approximately 450 employees and 8,000 students. Access to modern offices and classrooms is necessary in order for the University to expand further and assemble its operations.
“This is a fantastic prestigious project, which we are very pleased to be part of with Akademiska Hus. It will be an important building for Gothenburg, both in its function and its architectural expression. At the same time, it places high demands on our ability to build in one of the city’s most vibrant stretches,” says Peter Carlzon, Construction manager at Serneke Construction.
“The project is fully in line with our strategy of selecting contracts with well-established and professional clients. It is extremely pleasing to sign a contract with Akademiska Hus today, says Davor Sinik,” Regional manager, Special projects, at Serneke Construction.
An architectural competition was organized by Akademiska Hus in consultation with Architects Sweden, the City of Gothenburg and the Swedish Transport Administration and in close collaboration with the University of Gothenburg. In 2015, the proposal Annex designed by Johannes Norlander Arkitektur won the competition. The new building, which includes teaching facilities, offices, student workplaces, premises for maintenance and operations and student union activities, is to be built in connection with the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg’s premises at Vasagatan in central Gothenburg. Part of the University’s existing building will be demolished to make room for the new construction.
The contract also includes integrating one of the West Link’s station entrances into the building at the corner of Vasagatan and Haga kyrkogata.
According to the architectural proposal, the new building will have a gross floor area (GFA) of approximately 12,000 square meters spread over seven floors above ground and two underground floors. The work will be carried out by Serneke as part of a Group-wide collaboration between the Construction and Civil Engineering business areas.
“The new building for the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg will become a functional and modern academic environment in the middle of central Gothenburg. We are pleased to have signed an agreement with Serneke Construction and look forward to having them as partners in this very exciting project,” says Hayar Gohary, Project director at Akademiska Hus.
The project will be carried out in close collaboration, including in-depth program- and system documentation stages and development of the final budget for the project. The order value, estimated at approximately SEK 350 million, is expected to be booked in the third quarter of 2019.
When the detailed development plan gains legal force, presumably in 2019, demolition and building permits can be applied for. Demolition of the existing building and thereafter construction, is estimated for 2020 with possible occupancy in 2023.
