Setra to cut production at three whitewood sawmills

Against the background of the uncertain market situation for sawn products, Setra is giving notice of production cutbacks at the whitewood sawmills in Hasselfors, Heby and Färila. On an annual basis, these measures represent a 20% decrease in Setra’s production of sawn whitewood products.

Börje Bengtsson, President and CEO, Setra, comments: “The international market for sawn products continues to be marked by considerable uncertainty.”

“For Setra market unease mainly affects sales of sawn whitewood products which have their main market within the euro zone. Prospects look a little brighter for our sawn redwood products which benefit, among other things, from relatively good demand from markets in North Africa,” says Bengtsson.

“In order to avoid building up large stocks of whitewood products in a weak market with high raw material costs, we are adjusting our production level to the lower demand,” says Per Fredrikson, head of the Whitewood business area. “The cutbacks we are making correspond to a 20% decrease in production of sawn whitewood.”

This notice of production cutbacks at the whitewood sawmills affects a total of 39 employees, 25 in Heby, 10 in Hasselfors and 4 in Färila. The number of employees at each sawmill today totals 96 in Heby, 87 in Hasselfors and 40 in Färila. Local negotiations under the Swedish Co-determination Act (MBL) will start in November.

The notice issued for the three whitewood sawmills in Hasselfors, Heby and Färila is in addition to local production cutbacks already decided during the fourth quarter and planned production shutdowns at Setra’s sawmills over Christmas and New Year.

Setra Group has a total of ten sawmills, three wood processing units and, via the subsidiary Plusshus, three modular building factories.
