Vimmerby sawmill to revert to a strictly redwood sawmill

Vimmerby sawmill, which is part of the Setra Group, will revert to its previous status as a strictly redwood sawmill. The sawmill also handled whitewood sawing for some time. The decision to refine operations entails that total annual production will decrease from approximately 190,000 cubic metres to 160,000 cubic metres. Approximately 15 persons will be affected once staffing has been adapted to the new production level.

Setra is conducting long-term efficiency improvement work to optimise profitable production of sawn and processed wood products. The market for whitewood products has been weak for some time, and earlier this autumn Setra made the decision to temporarily reduce production of sawn whitewood.

"Vimmerby sawmill has handled both redwood and whitewood products for some time," comments Eleonor Hansson, manager of Vimmerby sawmill. "When the sawmill now reverts back to sawing only redwood, production volume will decrease and we will have to adapt our operations accordingly."

Redundancies affecting approximately 15 persons are expected after year-end, when adaptation to the new production level has been completed. Co-determination negotiations have been initiated.

Setra runs sawmills and further processing at 16 locations throughout Sweden. To achieve high efficiency, the sawmills specialise in certain dimensions and wood types – pine or spruce. Vimmerby sawmill, which will now revert back to being a strictly redwood (pine) sawmill, today has 80 employees.
