Shaylor Group is delighted to announce being named winners of two award categories at the prestigious Celebrating Construction 2014 Awards at the ceremony held in Birmingham on Friday 25th April.

The first win of the night was for ‘Achiever of the Year’, where Martin Chambers, Shaylor Group’s Framework Director, was named winner. Born in Manchester, Martin became an adopted son of the West Midlands through graduating from Aston University in 1981. Based locally since then, Martin’s career includes leading some of the region and country’s most prolific construction businesses and projects, many of which have had a transformational impact on both the West Midlands economy and the wider construction industry. Having entered the industry as a sponsored trainee with George Wimpey, Martin has gone on to oversee and manage a number of companies, major projects and national programmes of work. Martin has played a pivotal role in the CIOB, being it’s Global President in 2007/8, was Chair of Birmingham’s Family Housing Association, a director of WMCCE and its successor organisation MCCE and the longest serving director of Millennium Point. Martin has strong links with academia being a governor of the University of Wolverhampton, external examiner with Aston University and a visiting professor at the University of Westminster. Martin is now achieving recognition for his leading role in the successful repositioning of Shaylor Group plc as one of the country’s most sought after SME contractors.

The second win of the night was for ‘Young Achiever of the Year’, where Quantity Surveyor Lee Cash walked away with the top prize. Lee’s entire working life has been with Shaylor Group, having initially joined the company for a one week work experience placement. Lee then joined the company full time in 2002 straight from school. Lee was first employed as an apprentice carpenter, working his way up through the trade while simultaneously studying for his NVQs, then HNC and BTEC qualifications, on day release programmes. Lee was then encouraged to enrol for a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying with Birmingham City University. In 2013 Lee’s hard work paid off when he gained a First Class Honours degree. Lee is a shining example of how early engagement with a young person can genuinely benefit both the organisation and the person by applying learning to practical experience to yield the best results.

Speaking of the success, Shaylor Group CEO Stephen Shaylor commented “We are delighted to see the efforts of two such talented individuals rewarded in this manner. They are both consummate professionals and ambassadors for the company, and we are proud to call them colleagues. Both Martin and Lee are evidence of Shaylor Group’s family based values and work ethos, and it is particularly gratifying to see Lee named as ‘Young Achiever of the Year’ given his long history with the company”.
