The South West office of contractors Shaylor Group has received a special visit to their renovation project at Trenance Cottages, Newquay.

Minister for Culture Ed Vaizey joined Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) SW Head Nerys Watts and a number of Trustees of the Cottages on a site visit to view progress on the £700,000 Grade II Listed building’s renovation.

Shaylor Group began work in March to refurbish the cottages with rooms housing displays showing how the residents of the three cottages lived in the 19th and early 20th centuries. An exhibition will show the history of tourism, fishing, the harbour and Newquay in wartime. Visitors can also enjoy a shop offering locally sourced products and other areas will include a café and meeting rooms. Shaylor Group began work after a competitive tendering process which saw Shaylor awarded the contract thanks to their specialist experience in both the heritage and interiors sectors.

The project has been heavily supported by the HLF thanks to the local community getting behind the funding bid. Nerys Watts, SW Head of the HLF commented “A big factor in this project securing the grant is the support of the local community. This building will tell Newquay’s story in different ways and everyone will be able to come and sample that story.”

Shaylor’s South West Commercial Manager Andrew Hoare commented “We are incredibly proud to bring our expertise to such an important local landmark and help to make it a central part of the community for generations to come. It has been a real pleasure working with both the HLF and the Friends of Trenance Cottages, and we look forward to a continued fruitful relationship.”

This is a part of Cornwall that you don’t see in Newquay except here, so hopefully in 100 years’ time our great- grandchildren will be enjoying these great cottages.
