Congratulations to Ken Rawe and the entire project team for the Shree Sanatan Day Care Centre, who have been named winners of the ‘Best Community Building’ in the LABC (EM) Building Excellence Awards.

LABC’s Building Excellence Awards are about the essence of good buildings. The finalists are not judged on architectural beauty, but on the ‘excellence’ shown from a construction and technical Building Control point of view. The awards showcase buildings and design teams that have had to tussle with technical issues, difficult sites, and innovative and creative solutions.

The project was put forward by Bernard Saunders of Leicester County Council Building Control who explained in his Entry “The Day Centre is operational between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday to accommodate up to 100 people daily. The first floor of the premises is used as a community centre for classes including language, RE and arts and crafts. The tight nature of the site, level differences and dilapidated adjoining structures presented many challenges before and during the works. When problems did come apparent, the Design Team with the Contractor (Shaylor Group) worked closely to ensure they could be resolved as early as possible including; an amendment to existing planning application to maximise the building footprint, party wall issues, level concerns and tanking.

A high level of competence was maintained by all to ensure Health and Safety was not breached by anyone working on site and members of the public around site. The Contractor’s Site Manager Nick Jones maintained good relationships with the neighbours and those appointed by the Owners to uphold their duties under the Consideration Contractors scheme and this scored highly on inspections. Examples of this included, using multi-lingual signage due to the diverse community in that area, first name association with neighbours, donations and contributions to the local charities.”

Speaking of their success, Ken Rawe Shaylor Group Framework Portfolio Manager commented "This project was very close to our hearts as we take real pride in working in the heart of communities. As we have seen, there were a number of quite significant challenges for our team in completing this project but we kept working hard to produce viable solutions and keep the project on track. We are delighted that the building users are so happy with our work and to also be recognised by our industry peers is wonderful."
