Messagemaker develops bespoke solution to assist with traffic at Mersey Tunnel

When a vital sign serving the exit from Toll Lanes at the Queensway Mersey Tunnel in Birkenhead suffered vehicle damage, Messagemaker responded.

The new LED signage developed and designed by Messagemaker incorporates bi-directional chevrons and ‘NO ENTRY’ signs, which remain secret until lit, operating on an ‘as needed’ basis. Not only are the LED signs more energy-efficient  than the old back-lit signs, making them more cost-effective, they are also brighter and more visible to drivers.

The signs are based on the Messagemaker DIA 640 bi-colour sign,  part of the company’s comprehensive range of competitively priced, LED road and traffic sign solutions.

The nature of the application and the site itself offered a number of challenges for Messagemaker. Firstly, the discovery of an existing underground structure required the development of specialised Post Foundation Fixings due to the shallow depth available for installation. The system also features a key operated remote control mechanism, providing additional security while building in the flexibility required to also allow police to access and operate the signs.

Manufactured and approved for use in the UK, Messagemaker’s portfolio of high specification road and traffic signs meets Highways England technical requirements and is backed up by full technical advice and support during specification and installation.
