PSM strengthens Spanish Navy relationship

As testament to its unrivalled product quality and customer service, PSM Marine has won a contract to supply tank gauging systems for two new Spanish Navy ‘Buque de Acción Marítima’ vessels following its successful delivery of four previous ships over recent years.

Awarded by leading Spanish naval shipyard Navantia, the work will see PSM designing and supplying a custom-designed integrated tank measurement system comprising 48 level transmitters, 30 level switches and 32 bilge switches, plus six display and repeater panels.

Buque de Acción Marítima ships are offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) responsible for a variety of missions including control of maritime traffic, search and rescue and operations to combat terrorism, piracy, drug trafficking and human trafficking.

Having already won contracts over the past eight years to deliver tank gauging systems for the first four OPVs, PSM’s excellent reputation meant Navantia had no hesitation when asking them to work on the two new vessels, scheduled for delivery in 2019 at a cost of 166 million Euros each.

For this project, the specification required accurate and reliable products suitable for military use, but more specifically, a custom designed hardware and software interface into the Navantia master control system, to allow complete the integration of the level measurement functions into ship’s operations.

Accurate, robust and reliable, PSM’s marine tank gauging systems and instruments enable vessels to operate efficiently and comply with safety and environmental regulations. From a single switch to complete systems, PSM’s type approved and quality certified range of transmitters, gauges and switches are compatible with fuel oil, lubricants, hydraulic fluid and bilge or ballast water and other liquid cargo.

“For security-critical operations such as those carried out by the Spanish Navy, it was vital that we took Navantia’s specific requirements and developed the exact solution to meet those needs,” said Mark Jones, PSM Sales Director.

“For most customers a ‘one-size-fits-all’ system will not suffice and we pride ourselves creating bespoke systems to address each project specification. We’re delighted with this contract win for Navantia and look forward to continuing our successful relationship with them.”
