Real Time Information Displays Optimises Loading Efficiency at Tanker Terminal

Tankers arriving at the Vopak oil and chemical terminal in London are benefitting from a new LED Display that gives directions on cargo location, helping to optimise turn-round times and ensure safe traffic management.

Vopak supplies logistics and distribution services to the chemical and oil industry. Situated on the River Thames under the Dartford Crossing, the London terminal is the Vopak Group’s largest with a handling capacity of over 2.25 million barrels for products such as petroleum, chemicals, liquefied gas and vegetable oils.

Two large LED screens located at the terminal’s entrance show pump availability and the location of pumps for different liquid types. On arrival, tanker drivers now use this information to inform their onward route through the terminal, based on the product they need to load.

Vopak wanted to set up the screens to make communication to the tanker drivers more efficient using real time information. Messagemaker, a specialist supplier of LED screens, worked to develop a solution where both screens are fed via a screen capture from the terminal’s office and transferred via PC and fibre optic cables.

In addition to the data screens, a third large LED display at the entrance also shows CCTV from the pump area, allowing drivers to see when it is safe to move forward.

The new signs have proved highly successful, leading to the placement of a further order with Messagemaker for a number of Vehicle Activated Speed Signs, together with a Traffic Information Sign, to help control traffic speeds around the terminal and improve site safety.

Comments Jim Francis of Messagemaker: “Messagemaker’s industrial LED and safety displays provide a permanent high visibility reminder to help increase awareness amongst staff and visitors. They can act to reduce accidents, convey important site information, provide feedback on performance statistics, and keep staff informed and motivated.

He adds: “As specialist suppliers with many years’ experience in the transport and logistics sector, we are able to provide a bespoke design and manufacture service to meet the often very specific site and operational requirements of busy companies like Vopak processing large numbers of vehicles and routings, with a range of cargoes.”
