Safety in Action

Vehicle speed is widely acknowledged to be a major contributory factor in road accidents. By directly targeting driver behaviour through dynamic feedback, Vehicle Activated Signs have been proven to make a real difference, reducing speeds by up to 15%* and encouraging motorists to drive more safely.

Reinforcing statutory signage, VAS enables faster drivers in particular, whose road behaviour may contribute disproportionately to accident risk, to be targeted. The signs use a programmable Doppler Radar Detector, which is triggered by oncoming vehicles approaching at above the pre-set speed levels. The signs work on a psychological level, sending a message to the brain which triggers an automatic impulse to decelerate or brake. Consciously, the signs provide a timely reminder to slow down and be more observant on approach to hazards and areas where pedestrians could be at risk. The signs are popular with motorists, providing an advisory message rather than legal enforcement and are suitable for any type of vehicular access including emergency services and along bus routes.

LED sign specialists Messagemaker have recently published a guide designed to help highways and transport planning specifiers decide whether VAS is suitable for them and in choosing which VAS is right for their local needs and issues. The Guide also looks at the key criteria to bear in mind when locating VAS.
