Bar Unico Open for Business!
News Release
28th November 2013
A new Italian coffee bar, opened in Lincoln by mother and son team Diana and Gio Carchedi, has welcomed its first customers.
Former Grimsby Town footballer Gio (30) has always wanted to set up his own business after experiencing the famous Italian hospitality during holidays to visit his family in southern Italy.
Together with his mum Diana, he has now brought an authentic Italian experience to Lincoln and says the response has been tremendous.
“We’ve only been open for a short time but already we have several regular customers who sometimes come in two or three times a day,” said Gio.
“We’ve had lots of great comments about the quality of the coffee, especially from our Italian visitors who have told us it’s like being in bar in Milan or Turin, which is exactly what we set out to achieve.
“The bar food is also proving popular and people love the idea of being able to buy freshly prepared stone-baked pizza by the slice to eat in or take away.”
In addition to stone-baked pizza Diana also makes all of the bar food, including the pastries, meatballs, arancini (rice balls filled with a spicy tomato sauce and coated with breadcrumbs), cakes and biscotti, using family recipes which have been passed down through the generations.
“It’s wonderful to see people enjoying the food that I used to eat growing up in Italy,” explained Diana.
“Many of my relatives live in Lincolnshire and they see this as a real family business which has helped us to create a Little Italy right here in St Benedict’s Square. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly and both Gio and I enjoy looking after people and providing great customer service.”
One of the most popular attractions so far has been the gelato which has proved very popular with ice cream lovers and the famous Italian aperitivo which is becoming popular with the after work crowd on a Friday.
As well as opening late on Thursdays and Fridays until 8pm Bar Unico is also now open on Sundays between 11am and 4pm.
“We’re still finding our feet with regard to the opening times,” explained Gio. “Although we’d love to be open seven days a week we do need a day off to catch up on the admin so at the moment we’re open on a Sunday and closed on a Monday but we’ll re-evaluate this after Christmas.”
