Brave Lurcher Willow Finds a Happy New Home

News release

3rd June 2013

A resilient dog has been taken into a loving new home after being found in a neglected state in January.

Willow, a Lurcher, was discovered curled up on the doorstep of a farmer in Whaplode near Spalding, too weak to shelter herself from the rain.

She was quickly taken to Jerry Green Dog Rescue in Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, where she was found to be suffering from malnutrition and weighed just 16.3kg, well under the average weight for a Lurcher of Willow’s build, which is 24kg.

Willow, thought to be around 18 months old, also had mange and open pressure sores, the result of being made to sleep somewhere uncomfortable without proper bedding.

The team at Jerry Green set to work and, through a combination of antibiotics, regular baths with a mange treatment and time to build her strength back up, they were able to give Willow the expert care and attention needed to nurse her back to health.

Jo Hickson, Manager at the South Lincolnshire Rescue Centre, is thrilled with the progress Willow made during her time at Jerry Green, saying: “She is now a happy, confident, playful dog that shows no lasting damage from her neglect.”

Thanks to the efforts of the team at Jerry Green Dog Rescue, Willow has recently been adopted by a loving family in a small village near Boston, and is happier and healthier than ever before.

Jo added: “Willow’s new owners tell us she is such a joy to share their lives with. Very quickly, and true to her breed, she found the comfiest places in the house to make her own! They are so grateful that this wonderful girl has been brought into their lives.”

Notes to editors:

The family which has adopted Willow has asked for their name and location to be kept confidential.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities. It has rescue centres in five locations:

• Broughton near Brigg, North Lincolnshire
• Algarkirk near Boston, Lincolnshire
• Blidworth near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
• Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire
• Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.

The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.

The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding. This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
