News release

6th June 2013

Age UK Lincoln has so far raised £700,000 to renovate and extend the Park Street Activity Centre in Lincoln, but there are still essential items that are needed to help modernise the premises.

That’s why the charity is now asking local businesses to help out by donating items for the new building.

So far, funding has been raised through the sale of the current Age UK Lincoln head office and through a grant of £200,000 from the Bradbury Foundation. The rest has come from the charity’s own reserves.

Lindum Construction began work on the centre on Monday (3rd June) and has been working closely with the charity to ensure best value for money and to help secure donations of necessary items where possible.

But there are still many items needed to finish this project that the charity doesn’t have allocated funding for, including a new boiler, new toilets, new electrics and more.

Age UK Lincoln is asking businesses to donate any items they can to the cause in order for them to finish the extensive development work to a standard that will ensure longevity of the building and the comfort of the charity’s 1,800 weekly customers.

The centre offers a wide range of services for older people, including friendship clubs, classes, a subsidised restaurant and a hairdresser. There is also an IT suite, a café and an information and advice service.

The building work is expected to be complete by Christmas 2013. The centre will continue to operate as normal during the construction period.

“This project will breathe a new lease of life into the building, which is already much loved and well used by customers and staff alike. However, there are still certain things that we don’t have allocated funding for and we would like to have in place by the time work ceases in December,” said Georgina Garrett, Fundraising and Marketing Manager at Age UK Lincoln.

“Part of this project plan is to modernise the facilities, as some of our current furnishings are becoming very worn and quite uncomfortable to use. We would be truly grateful if local businesses could give us a helping hand to make this project a real success.”

Other ways to help this project reach its full potential are by sponsoring a brick of the building, sponsoring a function room or contributing to the charity’s Mile of Pound Coins.

For more information on how you can help, or if you would like to make a donation, please contact Georgina Garrett on 01522 696000 or email georgina.garrett@ageuklincoln.org.uk.

The busy times continue for the charity as, tomorrow (Friday 7th June), Age UK Lincoln will celebrate its 55th anniversary. To commemorate this landmark the Park Street Activity Centre will be hosting a 55 years celebration event on the day, joined by the Mayor of Lincoln.

The 55th anniversary party will be marked by a photo opportunity on Friday 7th June 2013 at 11:15am at Age UK Lincoln’s Park Street Activity Centre, LN1 1UQ.

The media are welcome to attend this event for photo and interview opportunities.
