Children in Cockburnspath Enjoy a Glass of the White Stuff
News Release
30th October 2012
Children at a nursery in Cockburnspath can now enjoy a daily glass of the white stuff straight from their local diary thanks to a new scheme set up by the UK’s leading school milk provider.
In line with the Government’s free nursery milk initiative, Cool Milk is supplying Cockburnspath Village Nursery with milk from D R Bruce in Coldstream and to celebrate Amoolia the Cool Milk cow visited the nursery on Friday (26th October) to say hello to the children.
Chairperson and parent at Cockburnspath Village Nursery Sarah Ross Russell said: “The youngsters really enjoyed meeting Amoolia and learning about where milk comes from. It is important to educate the children about healthy eating and drinking, especially from an early age, which includes the importance of drinking milk to support healthy teeth and bones.
“This is one of our nursery’s main principles: to supply the children with a healthy nutritious snack every day whilst sitting together to encourage good manners and social skills. The nursery provides a caring, friendly and stimulating atmosphere for the children to be educated in following the Early Years Curriculum for Excellence expertly delivered by our enthusiastic staff.
“Cockburnspath Village Nursery loves the Cool Milk scheme as they deliver fresh milk to us every week and importantly we are supporting our local dairy.”
In the UK, milk is free for children in day care or primary education under the age of five and subsidised By the European Union for pupils aged five to eleven.
Cool Milk works in partnership with local authorities and early years groups to administer the scheme, making the provision of milk easier and taking the burden away from schools.
As well as delivering fresh, chilled milk to the classroom Cool Milk also funds milk purchases for children under five so the school or nursery doesn’t have to deal with bills from the diary and completes all the paperwork free of charge.
John Sedgwick, Managing Director of Cool Milk, said milk is an important part of a child's diet: “Encouraging milk consumption from an early age is vital for establishing good eating habits. Not only is it vital for building healthy bones and teeth but it also improves a child’s concentration, memory and creativity and offers a variety of social opportunities.”
Milk is one of the most nutritionally complete foods available. As well as being an excellent source of protein, vitamins and minerals that are essential for good health, milk can help prevent dehydration and gives an energy boost in a way that does not harm teeth, aiding concentration, memory and creativity.
