When Tessa St Bernard just missed out on the required International Baccalaureate grades she needed for a psychology degree, she changed her mind and found a different course through Clearing at Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln.

Now she’s studying Early Childhood Studies at BG and is hoping to work abroad as a primary school teacher after she graduates.

“It may sound like a cliché, but everything does happen for a reason, so any student having to go through Clearing should remember this and try not to panic” said Tessa (19) from Harrow in London.

“I didn’t get my first choice so I had to come up with a plan B on the spot. It is all about what you want out of life, and with anything you need a plan B, so just to stay calm and think logically about the future.”

Tessa says she enjoys the teaching at BG and the friendly atmosphere on campus.

“The great thing about the course at BG is that they offer good, practical, hands-on experience, and I even get to spend a semester in Denmark teaching children on the Erasmus Programme, which I am very much looking forward to,” she said.

“I also love the fact that BG is such a small close-knit community so you really feel like you are getting the support you need.”

Tessa has already been on placements at schools within the UK, and having lived in both Jamaica and Holland before moving to London she’s looking forward to achieving her desired career in international schools.

“The thing that most drew me towards BG in Clearing was its excellent reputation for students going straight into work after graduation. I believe employers will see where my degree has come from and recognise this.”
