15th July 2011

A collection of aircraft artwork, which has been mounted onto aluminium panels designed to represent the sides an aeroplane by Lincolnshire signmaker Allen Signs, is touring the county.

Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire launched the Aircraft Nose Art Competition, which was open to young people aged between six and 22, in September last year to celebrate the county’s rich aviation history.

Allen Signs’ specialist team of signmakers and engravers painted the winners’ designs and the next best 18 entries onto riveted aluminium panels. These will displayed at a number of events across the county starting with the SO Festival in Skegness from 22nd to 24th July.

As well as the SO Festival the panels will also be exhibited at the Podium @ Scunthorpe Market on 26th and 27th August, at the Kustom Kulture Blastoff 2 Festival in Spalding on 3rd and 4th September and at the Lincoln Library Exhibition Hall from 26th September.

David Allen, Managing Director of Allen Signs, said it was a really interesting project to work on.

“This competition has really triggered people’s imagination and the standard of entries has been incredibly high,” said David.

“It’s not every day we get asked to livery a fighter plane, but my father painted the original black panther on the Vulcan XH558 many years ago which is now flying again so in some ways we’ve come full circle!

“It’s great to see young people taking an interest not only in the county’s aviation past but also in art and we hope that it inspires the next generation of graphic designers.”

David Harrigan, creator of the competition and Outreach and Learning Officer for Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire, said: “The response to the competition, which was advertised on radio and in the press as well as through direct mailing to schools and colleges, was outstanding.

“The quality and level of research by entrants of all ages really astounded the three independent judges and I’m delighted that a new generation has been inspired to pay tribute to this iconic art form.

“Allen Signs has done a fantastic job bringing the designs to life and I looking forward to seeing the finished artworks on display.”
