Pupils at Queen’s Park School in Lincoln will be celebrating The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on (Friday 1st June) by planting trees donated by the UK’s leading school milk supplier.
Employees from Lincoln-based company Cool Milk will be visiting the community special school on South Park at 11am on Friday to help the pupils plant the trees as part of the Woodland Trust Jubilee Woods project.
Managing Director of Cool Milk John Sedgwick explained: “To celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's historic 2012 Diamond Jubilee, the Woodland Trust is encouraging millions of people across the UK to come together to plant 6 million trees.
“Cool Milk is keen to support the Jubilee Woods project by donating trees to schools which they can plant in their grounds. Not only is planting trees beneficial for the environment but it also gets the children outdoors, learning about nature and having fun at the same time.
“We’ve been supplying free and subsidised milk to the Queen’s Park School since May last year and we’re delighted to be visiting the school on Friday and joining in with their Jubilee day celebrations.”
The six trees and shrubs will be planted in the school garden which was created in memory of Alana Francis, a classroom assistant who was tragically killed in a car accident in 2007 aged just 17.
Although the school has been earmarked for closure in September 2013 after Lincolnshire County Council decided it was no longer fit for purpose, the building and the garden will become a community resource.
Following the school closure the pupils will be moving to Lincoln St Christopher’s in North Hykeham. However, the annex at Queen’s Park School for 14 to 19-year-olds will still be in operation.
Head Teacher Allan Lacey said the garden will be a legacy from the school to the local community.
“Although the school is closing next year the garden will live on in memory of Alana and the father of one of former teaching assistants Mr Welch who helped to build it and has sadly since died of cancer,” explained Mr Lacey.
“We hope the garden, which was designed to help stimulate the children’s senses, will become a valuable community resource and visitors will be able to enjoy lots of different smells, textures and colours.
“The school buildings will also remain and be transformed into a community centre for everyone to enjoy. Although no firm plans have been made Lincolnshire County Council has shown a positive commitment to making this happen, so although it’s the end of one chapter it’s also the start of another.”
In addition to planting the trees on Friday the school will also be holding a Diamond Jubilee street party in the playground and the children and staff will all be dressed in red, white and blue.
