Mansfield Town midfielder Lee Stevenson has added his support to an appeal to raise funds for a new dog rescue centre in north Nottinghamshire.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue in Blidworth is aiming to raise £250,000 to help pay for the redevelopment of the centre, which will allow the charity to rehome more dogs and look after them in more comfortable surroundings.

Footballer Lee Stevenson paid a visit to the centre’s annual open day in Blidworth on Sunday (28th July) and met Jimmy, the Patterdale Terrier who is the face of the fund-raising appeal – Stepping Stone to a New Home.

“I love dogs and my partner and I are thinking of adopting one,” said Lee, who is hoping to play an important role in Mansfield Town’s first season back in the Football League.

“There are so many abandoned and unwanted dogs that people really should consider adopting a rescue dog.

“Jerry Green Dog Rescue does fantastic work rehoming hundreds of dogs every year, and I’m only too pleased to lend my support to their fund-raising appeal.”

The open day featured a fun dog show, agility course, rescue dog parade, behavioural advice and a children’s treasure hunt and raised £821.29 towards the appeal.

The existing centre at Blidworth can currently only cater for 10 dogs and the kennels and associated facilities are outdated and in a poor state of repair.

The new purpose-built facility will provide accommodation for 30 dogs as well as new offices, a training barn and an intake block to receive dogs when they are first brought into the centre.

The house and kennels which currently make up the centre will be demolished, and overnight accommodation for staff will be provided in the new facility.

Jimmy is a typical example of the kind of dog rescued and rehomed by Jerry Green Dog Rescue. He  was left tied up and in a neglected state outside the doors of the Blidworth centre in June, but he is now on the road to recovery and will be looking for a permanent new home in around two months.

Building work on the new centre will begin in the autumn and Catherine Foster, Head of Fundraising at Jerry Green Dog Rescue, is asking dog lovers and local people to get behind the appeal.

She is also calling on supporters to help fund the project by donating just £10 to sponsor a brick.

“With such a large target to raise, we’re hoping that the Nottinghamshire community will get behind the fundraising drive and help us to create a state-of-the-art facility in terms of dog welfare for the region,” said Catherine.
