A North Nottinghamshire charity will open its doors to the public next weekend as part of an appeal to raise vital funds for its redevelopment.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue in Blidworth, near Mansfield, will host an open day on Sunday 28th July to raise awareness of the work it does and to launch the centre’s major redevelopment fundraising campaign, Stepping Stone to a New Home.

The annual open day will include a fun dog show, fun agility course, a rescue dog parade, Pooches’ Patisserie (baked treats for dogs), canine first aid, behavioural advice, a children’s treasure hunt, merchandise stalls, a cake stall and a BBQ.

Mansfield Town midfielder Lee Stevenson will be lending his support on the day, and visitors will be able to meet Jimmy, the face of  the appeal –  a Patterdale Terrier who was left tied up and in a neglected state outside the doors of the Blidworth centre last month.

The centre recently gained planning permission for a major redevelopment which will triple the number of dogs that can be accommodated, add a training block and new office and include an intake block to receive dogs when they are first brought into the centre. There will also be overnight accommodation for staff.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue aims to educate the public about caring for rescue dogs and raise awareness of the fundraising appeal. Head of Estates Howard Bridges said: “We are looking to raise £250,000 for the redevelopment of our Nottinghamshire centre, and this open day should give people a good idea of how much work we do here and what the extra funding would mean to us and the dogs.”

The charity is calling on supporters to help fund the project by donating just £10 to sponsor a brick.

“With such a large target to raise, we’re hoping that the Nottinghamshire community will get behind the fundraising drive and help us to create a state-of-the-art facility in terms of dog welfare for the region,” said Catherine Foster, Head of Fundraising at Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

The open day will take place on Sunday 28th July 2013 from 11.30am until 4.30pm. Entrance costs £1 and under 16s can get in for free.

The Nottinghamshire centre can be found at Blidworth, Nottinghamshire NG21 0PG. For more information on visiting or adopting a dog please visit www.jerrygreendogs.org.uk to see what dogs are available for rehoming, or find the charity on Facebook.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 and operates five rescue centres across Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire

Case study

Kenny is an 18-month-old Harrier Hound who is looking for a new home, preferably with an owner who has experience of looking after hounds. Kenny has a lively temperament, enjoys interacting with other dogs and prefers to be in a social gathering rather than on his own.

Kenny will need someone at home most of the time. He enjoys being part of a family and can get on well with children who are used to dogs. He walks on a harness and after an initial period of excitement he will walk quite nicely! A typical hound by nature, he can be noisy when excited, but once settled into a routine, he will be a great addition to any family.

Notes to editors:

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities. It has rescue centres in five locations:

  • Broughton near Brigg, North Lincolnshire
  • Algarkirk near Boston, Lincolnshire
  • Blidworth near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
  • Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire
  • Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.

The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.

The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding.  This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
