Don’t Get Caught Out by Self Assessment Deadline

News release

11th January 2013

Chartered accountants Duncan & Toplis are urging people not to get caught out by the imminent self assessment tax deadline which is looming at the end of January.

The leading accountancy practice, which has 10 offices across the East Midlands, already takes away the pain of self assessment by preparing and submitting well over 10,000 returns on behalf of clients every year.

The 31st January deadline applies to all individuals who need to complete a self assessment tax return and make direct payments to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs in respect of their income tax, Class 4 National Insurance and capital gains tax liabilities.

There is an automatic penalty of £100 if the return is not submitted on time, even if there is no tax due or the return shows that a refund is due.

“Submitting your self assessment return can be as inviting a prospect as a visit to the dentist – but at least we at Duncan & Toplis promise to make it a less painful experience,” said Nicholas Smith, a Tax Partner at Duncan & Toplis.

“Not everyone needs to complete a tax return – you may already pay all the tax due on your earnings or pensions through your tax code under PAYE.

“But if your tax affairs are more complicated – for example, if you’re self-employed or a company director, or if you receive a foreign income – you will always need to complete a tax return.

“Remember too that the deadline relates not just to personal tax but also to trusts and partnerships.”
