PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

29/06/2012

Children throughout Derbyshire can enjoy the health benefits of fresh chilled milk delivered to their classroom thanks to the introduction of a new school milk scheme.

To celebrate, Dr Hilary Jones GP, Breakfast TV Health Editor and Medical Advisor to Cool Milk, visited St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Glossop and Tintwistle C of E Primary School in Glossop on Tuesday (26th June) to talk to the children about the benefits of drinking school milk.

Special assemblies were held at each school and Dr Hilary also had the chance to visit the children in their classrooms to find out what they have learnt about milk.

Dr Hilary Jones said:

“It is important that children have access to such a wholesome and nutritional product whilst they are still growing and developing.

“I had a great day; I was very impressed by how much the children at the schools know about milk and I now have some great cow jokes to take home with me!”

Dr Patricia Mucavele, Senior Research and Nutrition Manager for the School Food Trust, who also attended the event said:

“The School Food Trust believes that encouraging children to drink plain semi-skimmed milk as a mid-morning break is a great complement to healthy school lunches, providing protein and a good source of calcium which growing children need to build healthy bones and teeth.”

St Mary’s Catholic School head teacher Mr Simon Groarke said:

“In 2011 Ofsted recognised our outstanding contribution to healthy lifestyles and how we educate children in regard to healthy eating and nutrition. Today has served as a potent reminder of the need to lead a healthy and balanced routine. From watching the children’s reaction to Dr Hilary’s assembly, it has really motivated them to question how the body works and think about making healthier choices.”

Tintwistle C of E Primary School head teacher Mrs Jo Griffin said:

“The children really enjoyed Dr Hilary’s visit, particularly telling him their cow jokes that they have been practising for the past week!”

The day was arranged by Cool Milk which runs school milk schemes on behalf of schools in the UK. Cool Milk deal with the administration, paperwork claims and deliveries so school teaching staff can get on with the most important task – teaching.
