Dr Hilary to Promote School Milk Scheme in Cumbria

School kids at Thursby Primary will have a celebrity visitor on Friday (22nd June) when TV’s Dr Hilary Jones pays them a visit to mark the start of a new scheme to get milk into schools in Cumbria.

While school kids already enjoy fresh chilled milk every day the county council has now rubber stamped a new deal with company Cool Milk. From September Cool Milk will deal with all the administration and paperwork making life easier for schools and freeing up teachers’ time for teaching and learning. The milk will be provided by Cumbria County Council’s contracted supplier North Lakes Foods.

Dr Hilary Jones GP, nationally known for his work as Breakfast TV Health Editor, also acts as Cool Milk’s medical advisor. During his visit to Thursby Primary he will lead a school assembly, visit classrooms and host a discussion about child health with parents, teachers and school governors. He said:

“School milk is a great boost for children being such a wholesome and nutritional product, I believe every child in nurseries and schools up and down the country should have access to school milk every day”

The event will also be attended by Cllr Duncan Fairbairn, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet Member for Schools and Learning. He said:

“This new deal is great news for Cumbrian schools and Cumbrian milk producers – it ensures that schools will get milk from Cumbrian cows, packaged in Cumbria supplied direct to Cumbrian children by a local Cumbrian supplier. This is exactly the sort of initiative I would like to see more of, supporting our local economy and ensuring kids stay strong and healthy.”

Also in attendance on the day will be Wayne Jackson from North Lakes Foods and Debbie Heard from Cumbria County Council’s procurement team.
