A bride-to-be who suffered a tragic loss is now celebrating after winning her dream wedding dress because of a heart-felt competition entry.

To win the £750 wedding dress from newly-opened The Bridal Lounge Highgate, in Scredington, near Sleaford, Kirsty Bell, a retail area manager, sent in a picture of herself with fiancé Tom Moor, with an emotional write-up of how he helped her through one of the toughest times of her life.

Kirsty’s heartbreak began just days after she and Tom got the keys to their first house together on 8th October last year. Just a day later, she received the call she’d been dreading – her step mum of 22 years, Tracy Bell, 47, was dying from breast cancer just six weeks after being given the diagnosis. She passed away on 10th October. Tracy had been to the doctors suffering with blurred vision, but scans revealed she had primary cancer in her breasts, which had spread to her liver and lymphatic system.

Rather than starting her new life in Sewstern near Grantham with Tom, 26, Kirsty instead had to move to Leeds for nearly a month to live with her dad and make the heartbreaking arrangements for Tracy’s funeral. Once she returned, she discovered Tom had unpacked all the boxes and redecorated the kitchen to make their house a relaxing and comfortable home where his fiancée could get over her loss.

“What was meant to be one of the happiest and exciting times of our lives soon became the saddest and scariest,” said Kirsty, 27, who grew up in the Sleaford area and who has been with Tom for seven years. "Tracy had been my step mum since I was five-years-old and was more like a close sister.

“I couldn't have got through losing her without Tom, he was my rock and without him I would have crumbled. Our relationship is so special and we are now ready to take on the world. I’m going to work hard now to make our wedding day the best time of our lives, the way he tried to make things special for me last year.

“When they called out my name at the launch party, I was gob smacked, I never expected to win. People said that Tracy must have been looking down on me that day, and I believe that’s true. The Bridal Lounge has been brilliant, really making the experience special for me, I’m very grateful.”

The happy couple plan to marry on Saturday 21st June next year at Peak Edge Hotel in Derbyshire. Her story was told at the boutique’s glittering grand opening on 26thJuly, leaving many of the crowd in tears, including Kirsty. She has now been in for her first fitting and chosen her dream dress.

Boutique owner Rachael Scott, said: “We received a lot of entries to the competition and there were lots of very worthy entrants. Kirsty’s story just struck a chord with me. She was so open and honest in her entry, and the way she spoke about Tracy really made me understand what she’d lost. This was a chance for us to give a little something back to her.”
