The Director-General of the CBI has told a Lincolnshire audience that the UK needs to trade its way back to growth and use exports as a way to beat the recession.

John Cridland, who was educated at Boston Grammar School, was addressing the annual Directors’ Briefing organised by chartered accountants and business advisers Duncan & Toplis at the Belton Woods Hotel near Grantham on Wednesday (12th September).

“Here in the UK we need to rediscover our habits as a trading nation,” said Mr Cridland, who believes growth will be driven by export to non-Eurozone countries. “The world’s emerging economies want branded goods and services,” he added.

Mr Cridland predicted that the private sector would drive growth in the UK economy and spoke out in support of Lincolnshire’s number one industry: agriculture and farming. “We must support successful parts of the economy, such as agri-business, aswell as the likes of car manufacturing and aerospace among others,” he argued.

He also spoke of the need for greater infrastructure investment in the rural economy – in broadband, transport and housing – to help kick-start the economy.

John Cridland was just one of the headline speakers at the Directors’ Briefing, which was attended by well over 100 senior business people.

Other speakers were Jane de Lozey, Joint Head of Fraud at the Serious Fraud Office; Sleaford and North Hykeham MP Stephen Phillips QC; Neil Parker, Market Strategist at NatWest; cybercrime expert Dibble Clark from 3SDL and Nick Smith, a tax partner at Duncan & Toplis.

“We were delighted with this year’s event,” said Peter Townsend, Chairman of Duncan & Toplis who also chaired the briefing. “The speakers proved a great draw and it was fascinating to hear the insights they offered.

“We’ve had excellent feedback from our delegates, who went away with very useful information.”
