03rd June 2013

Farmers will be given a guided tour of a new fertiliser facility thanks to one of the UK’s leading farmers’ buying groups, Woldmarsh.

The farmer-owned agricultural buying group based in Louth, Lincolnshire will take its members to Bunn Fertiliser Ltd’s new Teesport facility in Middlesbrough, which blends and distributes fertiliser for customers across the UK.

The visit on Wednesday (5th June) has been organised jointly between Woldmarsh and Bunn Fertiliser and will be the first time members of a farmers’ buying group have been to the depot, which opened in January.

Farmers will be given a talk on the facility and its products, before touring the purpose-built site, which is equipped with new machinery including two bagging lines and fertiliser production units.

Woldmarsh, which will be attending the industry’s leading technical event for the UK arable industry, Cereals, on 12th and 13th June, said the visit will be an opportunity for farmers to see at first hand how one of the most valuable assets in the industry is supplied to them.

Heather Claridge, Business Manager for Woldmarsh, which is a not-for-profit organisation serving more than 800 members, said: “The aim of the trip is to allow farmers to see for themselves what investments are being made in the UK fertiliser industry. We are particularly keen to be involved as this will be the first farmer trip to the new site, and it will service our customers.

“The facility represents a significant investment in the UK farming industry. The site will offer improved logistics capability for farmers in the north of England, also covering the Woldmarsh area. It deals with an advanced nitrogen fertiliser, a product which we feel has a place in the Woldmarsh product portfolio.”

The Teesport facility supplies Koch Advanced Nitrogen® (KAN) fertiliser which is becoming popular due to high performance, simplicity and cost-effectiveness.  A recent, comprehensive report by agricultural and environmental consultancy ADAS, stated that the fertiliser provided the best combination of economic performance and greenhouse gas intensity relative to traditional products like ammonium nitrate or urea.

Ian Moseley from Bunn Fertiliser said: “The KAN fertiliser is a product we are particularly proud of and, along with strengthening our relationship with Woldmarsh, we hope the trip will help raise awareness of KAN and its benefits beyond the traditional offerings. This is our first tour, and we are extremely excited to show Woldmarsh members around.”

One Woldmarsh member attending the trip is arable and beef farmer Richard Milligan-Manby, who runs Wykeham Farm at Ludford, near Louth.

“As a farmer I have to understand where my inputs are coming from and this is a chance for me to see at first hand how a fertiliser facility operates and meet the people behind the product,” said Mr Milligan-Manby, who said the visit will be the first of its kind for him in the UK.

“But more importantly for me, it’s a chance to look at what’s coming up in the future and how the market may change and develop as we go forward. I’m interested in finding out if there are going to be any new products coming out in the future which will help with the issues of global warming, and help us to reduce our carbon footprint.”
