Busy mum of four Peggy Hills will graduate with a first in English from Bishop Grosseteste University at Lincoln Cathedral on Wednesday (17th July) before going on to study for a PGCE.

Peggy, who is mum to identical twin girls Abby and Hannah (14) and two boys, Joshua (11) and Daniel (9), realised she wanted to be a teacher after starting volunteering work at a nursery and a primary school in Grantham.

However, she needed certain qualifications to start the process. “After some initial research on the internet, I went to see a careers advisor at Grantham College and we quickly established that I would need a GCSE grade C or above in English, Maths and Science, as well as A-levels and a degree in order to fulfil my aspirations,” said Peggy.

“Starting in 2008, I spent two years at college, working hard to gain the qualifications I needed (As and A*s this time) to go to university before entering Bishop Grosseteste University in 2010.”

Peggy will now go on to study for her PGCE at Bishop Grosseteste University with a view to becoming a fully qualified teacher.

“Although I initially looked on this journey as a means to an end, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience and I cannot wait to come back to BGU in September for the PGCE,” she said.

“BGU has become a sort of second home to me over the last three years and I have had some great times and made some really good friends (students and lecturers) along the way.”

Peggy, who is originally from Celle in Germany, managed to juggle the busy day-to-day jobs of motherhood with her studies and says that the key to her success was a supportive family, organisation, working at night and a friendly neighbour.

I found that, once the children had gone to bed, I could concentrate on my studies and work much more productively. Timetables, lists and my faithful diary have been invaluable in completing work to deadlines, whilst also dealing with household chores and finding quality time to spend with my husband and children.

“Despite my best efforts to balance these different aspects of my life, things have, at times, gotten on top of me and there have been many tears along the way but those lows are far outweighed by the encouragement (and cuddles) from my family, and the sense of achievement I have gained.

“I would not have been able to manage without their support - and a very helpful neighbour who looked after the children when I had to get to university early or returned home late.”

Peggy will graduate at 2.30pm on Wednesday 17th July 2013.
