Dogs are never shy about showing their affection – and that’s why Jerry Green Dog Rescue is asking people to give a dog the gift of love this Valentine’s Day.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue, a charity which has a centre at Broughton near Brigg and in four other locations across Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, is urging dog lovers to donate a shoebox full of doggie treats as part of its Love Us, Love Our Dogs campaign.

The charity is currently looking to rehome around 150 abandoned and unwanted dogs, all of whom need food and shelter as well as toys and the occasional treat.

All the items donated will be given to the dogs to enjoy while Jerry Green Dog Rescue looks for a suitable new home for them.

“Around Valentine’s Day we all like to make a loved one feel special, and by spending just a few pounds you can make our dogs feel truly loved,” said Catherine Foster, Head of Fundraising at Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

“We’re asking dog lovers to help mend a broken heart by filling a shoebox with delicious treats and exciting toys for the dogs in our care.

“We would welcome donations of dog biscuits, gravy bones, chews, kongs – anything that will help our dogs to enjoy the time they spend with us.”

Jerry Green Dog Rescue, which was founded in 1961, rescues, cares for and rehomes abandoned and unwanted dogs and undertakes never to put a dog to sleep unless its health or temperament make this the kindest option.

If you would like to donate a shoebox of toys and treats this Valentine’s Day please take your donation to your nearest Jerry Green Dog Rescue Centre, ideally between 9th and 16th February 2013.

Notes to editors:

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities. It has rescue centres in five locations:

  • Broughton near Brigg, North Lincolnshire
  • Algarkirk near Boston, Lincolnshire
  • Blidworth near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
  • Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire
  • Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a unique policy whereby prospective adopters are not shown the dogs in their kennels; instead the charity introduces individual dogs to adopters in a neutral environment which is less stressful for the dogs.

People who offer to rehome a Jerry Green dog do so as adopters, not owners. Jerry Green Dog Rescue retains ownership of its dogs and insists on a number of meetings and home visits before a dog is adopted.

The charity receives no official funding, nor does it receive any money from the National Lottery Fund. This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors and sponsors.
