A dog rescue centre near Mansfield is to be redeveloped after planners gave the go-ahead to a major refurbishment project.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue will now launch an appeal to raise a quarter of a million pounds to help pay for the new centre at Blidworth, just south of Mansfield.

The existing centre can currently only cater for 10 dogs and the kennels and associated facilities are outdated and in a poor state of repair.

The new purpose-built facility will provide accommodation for 30 dogs as well as new offices, a training barn and an intake block to receive dogs when they are first brought into the centre.

The house and kennels which currently make up the centre will be demolished, and overnight accommodation for staff will be provided in the new facility.

Newark and Sherwood District Councillors approved the plans yesterday (Thursday).

“This redevelopment project is of vital importance to Jerry Green Dog Rescue and we’re extremely pleased that Newark and Sherwood Council has given us the go-ahead to get on with building,” said Howard Bridges, Head of Estates at Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

“This work is long overdue as our facilities here in Blidworth are badly in need of modernisation. Once the redevelopment is complete our capacity will increase threefold and we will be able to provide both the dogs and our staff with much more comfortable facilities.”

Building work is expected to start in September and the project should be completed by the spring of 2014. The work will be carried out in phases and the centre will continue to operate as normal.

Four people are employed on the seven-acre site, which first opened in 1988, and that number is set to increase once the new centre is fully operational.

The charity is calling on supporters to help fund the project by donating just £10 to sponsor a brick.

“With an overall target of £250,000 to raise, we’re hoping that the Nottinghamshire community will get behind the fundraising drive and help us to create a state-of-the-art facility in terms of dog welfare for the region,” said Catherine Foster, Head of Fundraising at Jerry Green Dog Rescue.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 and operates five rescue centres across Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.

Notes to editors

Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities. It has rescue centres in five locations:

  • Broughton near Brigg, North Lincolnshire
  • Algarkirk near Boston, Lincolnshire
  • Blidworth near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
  • Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire
  • Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.

The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.

The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding.  This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
