A leading dog rescue charity is reminding owners not to forget their pets when they go trick or treating this Halloween.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue is set to get spooky this weekend with a series of special Halloween-themed walks taking place in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

Staff at the charity’s five rescue centres are inviting owners and their pets to dress up and compete for prizes, with free treats, kindly donated by pet food company Arden Grange, for every dog taking part.

The events are being organised by the centres in conjunction with the fundraising team which believes there is currently a lack of pet-friendly celebrations taking place at this time of year, especially ones which the whole family can take part in.

“No one forgets their dog at Christmas and some lucky pets even get their own stockings but at Halloween pet owners rarely do much in the way of canine friendly activities,” said Catherine Foster, Head of Fundraising.

“We set up Howl-o-ween after realising that there was nothing for dogs to do at this time of year so it will be great to see our friends, pets and supporters wearing fancy dress.”

With no state or lottery funding, Jerry Green Rescue relies completely on the good will of individual donators and any profits from the event will go directly towards the care and re-homing of abandoned dogs.

All walks will take place at 1.30pm on 27th October apart from North Yorkshire which will host its ‘Howl-o-ween’ walk on Thursday 31st October at 2.30pm.

Walks will take place as follows:

  • Jerry Green Dog Rescue, Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire:  27th October, 1.30pm start, registration from 1pm
  • Knavesmire, York: 31st October, 2.30pm start, registration from 2pm
  • Jerry Green Dog Rescue, Algarkirk, Lincolnshire: 27th October, 1.30pm start, registration from 1pm
  • The Mount Café, Castlethorpe, near Brigg, North Lincolnshire: 27th October, 1.30pm start, registration from 1pm

All dogs are welcomed on leads, as well as those people without a dog simply wishing to support this worthy cause. Entry is £5 per adult and £2 per child.
