Jerry Green Opens its Doors in Catton
News release
5th June 2013
The mistreatment of animals in the UK has risen by over a third this year – but one North Yorkshire charity is doing its best to re-home dogs that have been abandoned or neglected.
Jerry Green Dog Rescue in Catton near Thirsk will host an open day next month to raise awareness of the work it does in rescuing and rehoming unwanted dogs.
The annual open day on Sunday 23rd June 2013 will include a fun dog show, dog demonstrations, a rescue dog parade, Pooches’ Patisserie (baked treats for dogs), canine massage, Pet Pawtraits, doggy photography, behavioural advice, a children’s treasure hunt and a hog roast.
The charity has five centres in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire and has already re-homed 208 dogs since the beginning of this year.
Supervisor Sian Baxter explained: “The day is all about educating the public about rescue dogs and ensuring that people understand how to care for their dog.
“Prospective dog owners must understand key aspects of dog handling including food and nutrition. Caring for a dog is a huge responsibility.”
Open days at the North Yorkshire centre have always been popular with the public and Jerry Green Dog Rescue is hoping this year’s event will be no different.
One of the dogs currently looking for a new home at North Yorkshire is Zack, a Border Terrier cross breed who has been maltreated throughout his life. “We would like him to be re-homed so he can spend the rest of his years with an owner who will care for him”, said Sian.
“He loves to have a quiet snuggle on the sofa and his favourite thing in the world is a new squeaky toy!”
The event will take place on 23rd June from 11.30am until 4.30pm. Entrance costs £1 and under 16s can get in for free.
The North Yorkshire centre can be found at Catton, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, YO7 4SQ. For more information on visiting or adopting a dog please visit www.jerrygreendogs.org.uk to see what dogs are available for rehoming, or find the charity on Facebook.
Notes to editors:
There was a 33.8 per cent increase in the number of convictions for animal neglect and cruelty in the UK last year, according to the RSPCA Prosecutions Annual Report. There were 3,114 convictions in 2011 compared to 4,168 in 2012.
Jerry Green Dog Rescue was founded in 1961 in Broughton, Lincolnshire and is now one of the UK’s largest dog rescue charities. It has rescue centres in five locations:
- Broughton near Brigg, North Lincolnshire
- Algarkirk near Boston, Lincolnshire
- Blidworth near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
- Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire
- Thirsk, North Yorkshire
Jerry Green Dog Rescue has a caring ethos which puts the dogs in its care at the centre of everything it does. It also operates a policy whereby prospective adopters are introduced to dogs in a neutral environment away from the kennel, resulting in less stress for the dog and increasing the chances of permanent homes being found.
The adoption process at Jerry Green Dog Rescue involves a number of introductory visits and the rehoming team provide pre and post adoption support to ensure the move to the dog’s new home is as smooth as possible.
The charity receives no Government or National Lottery funding. This means it is dependent on the generosity of public and corporate donors/sponsors.
