News Release

7th June

St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice, which has touched the lives of thousands of Lincolnshire families, will be celebrating its 30th anniversary with a special service at Lincoln Cathedral.

An evensong service at 5.30pm on 11th June 2012 will be dedicated to St Barnabas with a blessing from the Bishop of Lincoln, the Rt Revd Christopher Lowson, followed by a celebration reception at The Old Palace.

St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice was one of the first in the UK to open its doors in 1982 and thanks to the generosity of the community and the skills of its staff and volunteers it has remained at the national forefront of personalised and high quality patient care ever since.

Fundraising Manager Veronica Brien said: “This year the hospice is celebrating its 30th anniversary of caring and supporting patients throughout Lincolnshire.

“We greatly appreciate the support received from Lincoln Cathedral which is allowing us to be part of this service as it also falls on St Barnabas’ Day and to The Old Palace who are kindly supporting our celebration reception afterwards for invited guests of the Trust.

“The anniversary event is to celebrate this milestone and to thank the community for their continued support and fundraising efforts, without which we would not be able to continue expanding and developing our services across Lincolnshire.”

Manager of The Old Palace Sonja Brockman added: “We would like to wish the hospice a very happy birthday and we’re honoured to be hosting the celebratory reception.

“The hospice plays a significant role in many people’s lives and provides vital services to the terminally ill and their families.  We look forward to welcoming the Trust’s guests for what will be a very happy occasion.”

Last year St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice supported and cared for over 4,500 patients and their families across the county and the Trust require £3.1 million per year through voluntary income to provide the current services.

Medical Director, Dr Andrew Kutarski, said: “St Barnabas will strive to remain at the forefront of enabling patients to live well for as long as they can and to die with dignity in a place of their choice surrounded by the people they love”.

“The support we provide for carers and relatives through these difficult times is also a major part of our activities and we will continue to develop both of these aspects of our work to the best of our ability.”

About The Old Palace

  • The Old Palace was built next to the site of the Lincoln Medieval Bishops’ Palace, which was the administrative centre of the largest diocese in medieval England, in three phases between 1720 and 1885.
  • A major refurbishment was completed in 2009, restoring the building in sympathy with its various period interiors, whilst creating a comfortable and elegant environment. The Old Palace re-opened its doors to the public offering beautiful surroundings for meeting, conferences, private dining and wedding receptions.
  • In July 2012 a further 16 guest rooms will become available in the nearby Victorian former church of St Michael on the Mount which is currently being converted to the same standards as the main building.
  • The ruins of the Medieval Bishops’ Palace are separate from The Old Palace itself and are managed by English Heritage on a guardianship lease from the Diocese of Lincoln.
