News release

13th March 2012

Duncan & Toplis are advising businesses in the county to remain positive despite this month’s Budget predicted to reveal a deficit nearing £5 billion.

The East Midlands firm of accountants and business advisers will lead a series of breakfast briefings aimed at the business community and designed to guide business leaders through George Osborne’s announcement on 21st March.

Duncan & Toplis tax expert Mark Taylor says this professional advice could prove vital for business success, especially if anticipated tax increases and new legislation come to fruition.

“While we won’t know for sure until 21st March, it is likely that a new bill against corporate tax avoidance will be introduced, that the 50p top rate of tax won’t be scrapped and that fuel duty will not be cut,” he said.

“Very few tax breaks are expected this year, but if businesses are well informed they can avoid bearing the brunt of government borrowing,” he said.

Yet it’s not all doom and gloom for businesses in the county according to Christine Newitt despite the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) forecasting two successive quarters of negative growth for the UK between October 2011 and the end of March 2012.

“Sectors such as agriculture and food exports – traditionally strong in Lincolnshire – are making record profits, and farmland prices in the county have soared. So local businesses should focus on those positives and on the strengths of Lincolnshire,” she said.

The Duncan and Toplis Post Budget Presentations will take place on Thursday 22nd March and Friday 23rd March in the following locations:

Thursday 22nd March 2012

Duncan & Toplis, Spalding Post Budget Presentation (7.15am at the Sage Restaurant, Red Lion Street, Spalding)
