A South Wales nursery worker is celebrating today having earned a top accolade after studying for childcare qualifications and securing her first ever job.

Nicola Sanigar (35), who works at Daisy Day Nursery in Barry, won a national apprenticeship award aimed at recognising the efforts of those who are long-term unemployed but manage to find their way back into work.

The Apprenticeship Awards Cymru 2013, held at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport on Friday 18th October, celebrate outstanding achievements of learners, employers and apprenticeship providers across Wales. Nicola, who has four children, won the Steps to Employment – Learner of the Year award.

Nicola left school at 15 and before now had never been in paid employment. However, thanks to her local job centre she made contact with TSW Training and shortly after began its Steps to Employment course, landing herself a job at the popular South Wales nursery.

“Gaining skills gave me much more confidence and it feels great to be able to provide for my children with the money that I earn from working at Daisy Day Nursery,” she said.

Megan Roach, Deputy Manager at Daisy Day Nursery in Barry, was delighted with the news of Nicola’s accolade. “Apprenticeships and vocational placements are a valuable method of helping people with little or no qualifications into work.

“We are really proud of Nicola: she has worked very hard to get where she is today and we find her success story very inspiring,” she said.

The awards are organised jointly by the Welsh Government and the National Training Federation for Wales (NTfW).
