MEDIA RELEASE

17th September 2013

Gordon Banks, MP for Ochil and South Perthshire, acted as milk monitor for the day in Crieff Primary School Nursery in celebration of World School Milk Day.

To mark the event Crieff Nursery encouraged children to drink milk and understand the nutritional benefits milk provides, alongside hundreds of schools and nurseries across the UK throughout September and October 2013.

Mr Banks said “I always look forward to supporting the annual World School Milk Day and this year I was delighted to be lending a hand at Crieff Primary School Nursery.  Milk is extremely important to a child's diet and promotes overall good health.  It also provides an energy-giving boost without causing harm to the teeth.

Well done to Cool Milk for funding World School Milk Day in the UK and also for their work in continuing to raise awareness of the everyday goodness of milk for our children.”

World School Milk Day is on Wednesday 25th September. An initiative driven globally by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, World School Milk Day is funded in the UK by Cool Milk, the country’s leading school milk supplier.

The annual event, held on the last Wednesday in September, has been celebrated by children drinking milk in schools and early years settings in over 30 countries around the world since 2000.

In the UK, an estimated 1.5 million children under the age of five receive free milk every day, while pupils aged five to eleven receive subsidised milk.

Delivered fresh to the classroom, the milk is enjoyed as a group, promoting social development and independence. Milk is vital for building healthy bones and teeth and improves a child’s concentration, memory and creativity.

Lorraine Slabbert, Deputy Head Teacher, said “Each and every day the children in Crieff Primary School strive to achieve the best in the learning and fulfil their potential.  From early on in their nursery careers we focus on healthy living and healthy minds and the foods that allow us to grow, learn and achieve.  Milk is given to our children every day during our snack routine and this  is used as an integral teaching tool in the education of our children with regards to leading a  healthy lifestyle through making good choices. We talk about the health benefits of milk including good bone strength, smoother skin, stronger immune system and prevention of illnesses such as dental decay and dehydration.”

Milk is also subsidised for school children aged five to 11 by the European Union under the European school milk scheme.
  • It is recognised that there are a wide range of health benefits from drinking milk.
