News release
11th October 2012
Three new career-focused degree courses are being launched at Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln.
From September 2013 students at BG will be able to study Tourism, Psychology or Enterpriseand Entrepreneurship in combination with another degree subject. They will also be able to study Tourism as a single honours degree.
The new courses broaden the academic portfolio at BG, which already offers a wide range of degrees including Drama, English, Music, History, Sport and Mathematics as well as Education Studies and a range of teaching qualifications.
“Tourism is a fascinating subject to study at university,” said Andrew Jackson, Head of the Department of Culture and Creative Arts at BG.
“The new course will explore cultural and eco-tourism and tourism for children and families, building on many of BG’s long-standing strengths in heritage education and management and on its partnerships with the public, private and voluntary sectors.”
Graham Meeson, Head of the Department of Education and Learning, said introducing a Psychology degree was a natural development for BG.
“The Psychology degree course complements our suite of education-related courses that we already run within the department, such as Education Studies, Early Childhood Studies and Special Educational Needs and Inclusion,” he said.
“The aim is to eventually have a single honours Psychology course which is accredited by the British Psychological Society, but in the first instance it will be offered as a joint honours subject.
“Our Psychology degree will be taught on the campus and in a newly equipped psychology laboratory.”
The new Enterpriseand Entrepreneurship degree has been designed to work alongside other subjects offered at BG and to enhance students’ employability through learning beyond the classroom.
“The new course will have at its heart social enterprise and venture creation with an emphasis on learning by doing,” said Mark Bowen, Enterprise Development Manager at BG based in BG Futures.
“We are partnering with external supporters such as Lincolnshire Co-operative Ltd and UnLtd, who will add real value to the course in terms of visiting speakers, site visits, placements and potential internships.
“One of the most innovative aspects of this project is that it is embedded in the creative and cultural industries rather than being a business school model and will explore and develop the ‘human’ elements of being entrepreneurial in addition to the core skills and knowledge around business process.”
