7th November 2013

A Lincoln charity is in with a chance of winning £50,000 from The People’s Millions after it was selected to appear on ITV later this month.

Age UK Lincoln is urging its supporters to pick up the phone on Wednesday 27th November and vote for the charity, which aims to use the money to fund a new project for older people in the city.

Active 80 will create two local community hubs in the north and south of Lincoln – one at Ruckland Court on the Ermine Estate and the other at Eccleshare Court in Hartsholme.

Age UK Lincoln has recently taken over the running of these two day centres and its Active 80 project will bring communities together to help shape and deliver services to older people in the two venues.

The project has been selected for The Big Lottery’s People’s Millions public vote on ITV Calendar News on Wednesday 27th November 2013.

On the night Age UK Lincoln will go head to head with a disabled riding charity in Yorkshire.

“This project will improve the lives of older people in Lincoln and we’re really hoping to win the funding as it would make a massive difference to us,” said Georgina Garrett, Fundraising and Marketing Manager at Age UK Lincoln.

“It’s really important that all our friends and supporters pick up the phone and vote on 27th November.

“We will be informing people of the number to call at 9am on the day of the broadcast and people can vote all day from 9am until midnight.

“You can even vote for Age UK Lincoln up to ten times!”

Calls will cost 10p from a landline and standard network rates apply for mobile phones.

Age UK Lincoln wants to replicate the success of its Park Street Activity Centre by creating two community hubs where older people can choose and design what services they want.

Older residents will be encourage to get involved, using their skills to teach classes, share knowledge and expertise, volunteer at the centre and help improve community spirit.

“We want residents to see these hubs as places where they would like to spend time both now and when they get older,” said Georgina.

“We also want to encourage local schools, GP surgeries and businesses to get involved and support these two centres.”

Viewers will be asked to vote via telephone and the charity that gets the most votes will receive up to £50,000 to carry out its project.

The broadcast will take place on the same evening as Age UK Lincoln’s latest charity fashion show at the Priory Centre on Colegrave Street, Lincoln.

The show begins at 7pm and there will be TV screens available for people to watch the ITV broadcast before the start of the event.
