Thirty-two heritage sites across the UK have been given a prestigious Sandford Award recognising excellence in heritage education through their work with schools.

This year’s winners, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, Kensington Palace and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon, will receive their awards on Tuesday 29th November 2011 at Durham Cathedral – itself an award-winner.

The Sandford Awards are jointly managed by Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln and the Heritage Education Trust. Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln offers a Masters course in Heritage Education.

The awards will be presented by Professor Dame Rosemary Cramp, an eminent archaeologist, former trustee of the British Museum and founder of Bede’s World Museum.

Jean MacIntyre, Head of Innovation at Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln, said: “We are absolutely delighted that the 2011 Sandford Awards will be presented at such an iconic site. The awards are growing each year with more and more sites realising the advantages of celebrating their excellent practice by achieving an award.

“The next few years will be an exciting time for the Sandfords as we plan to broaden the scope of the scheme so that more people and more sites will benefit.”

John Hamer, Chairman of the Heritage Education Trust, commented:  “Increased access to, and understanding of, our heritage is essential if all sections of society are to have the opportunity to enjoy this rich and diverse national resource.

“The broad spectrum of excellent projects showcased by the Sandford Award winners really highlight just how active, and successful, the sector is in championing learning.”
