Celebrations will be under way at a Scunthorpe care home this week as one resident reaches her 101st birthday.

Dinah Keyes will reach the milestone birthday at her home at Carisbrooke Manor on Friday 27th July surrounded by friends and family – and will even receive a visit from the Mayor, Councillor Ivan Glover.

Last year Dinah, known affectionately as ‘Di’ to staff in the Burringham Road home which is run by Kapil Care Homes, was treated to a telegram from the Queen after reaching her centenary as well as a large bunch of flowers.

This time round she’ll have her hair done specially by mobile hairdresser Vanessa Simpson, tuck into birthday cake and enjoy a party with family, friends, staff and other care home residents.

“I don’t really have the secret to a long life, I just keep on,” said Dinah who despite her years still enjoys a good natter over a cup of tea. “My daughter comes to see me every other day which is very nice – family helps keep me young. I’m looking forward to my party very much.

“I like to watch television, especially Emmerdale, and I enjoy spending time sitting in the living room here.”

Born in 1911, Dinah grew up with her younger sister and brother in London before moving to Scunthorpe about 30 years ago. In her younger years she ran a family business with husband Reginald Keyes for 25 years and enjoyed sightseeing and spending time holidaying in Italy.

She has one daughter, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of which have visited the care home regularly since she moved there in October 2007.

Senior Care Assistant Ann Wustrack, who has worked for the family-run Kapil Care Homes business for 11 years, said: “I regularly assist Di with her personal requests and we’ll always have a chat.

“She’s not shy about telling you what she thinks about an issue and we can have some lively chats! She is a real pleasure to care for and I will look forward helping her celebrate her 101st year with us.”

As well as Carisbrooke Manor, Kapil Care Homes also runs Ascot House in the town and is in the final stages of completing a third care home at Old Brumby Street.
