Lincoln Business Club committee members have lost over six stone in weight and raised more than £300 for charity in a sponsored slimathon.

The seven members embarked on the eight-week challenge with help from staff at David Lloyd, Lincoln in November 2010 and shed a total of six stones eight pounds.

The £302 they collected in sponsorship is being donated to the Alzheimer’s Society which is the UK’s leading support and research charity for people with dementia, their carers and their families.

Lincoln Business Club Committee Member Richard Hare explained: “My father-in-law is suffering from Alzheimer’s so it is a charity which is very close to my heart.

“Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia and is a devastating disease which has no cure. Research into dementia is notoriously underfunded so I am delighted to be able to help in any small way I can.

“I would like to thank everyone who sponsored me and my fellow committee members and the staff at David Lloyd for their support.”

Volunteering Officer for the Alzheimer’s Society in the East Midlands Bex Mezzo said: “We would like to thank the Lincoln Business Club for their kind donation and for helping to raise the profile of such a worthwhile cause.

“Alzheimer's disease affects around 465,000 people in the UK and the society supports people to live well with dementia today and funds research to find a cure for tomorrow. We rely on voluntary donations to continue our vital work.

“There are lots of ways people can help to raise money for the charity, all of which are listed on our website http://www.alzheimers.org.uk. We hope that many more people will follow the Lincoln Business Club’s lead and support us in the fight against dementia.”
