Businesses in Grantham can learn more about the new phenomenon of cloud computing thanks to a free seminar next week.

Cloud computing is an umbrella term for using the Internet and its potential to help you do business when you’re not at your office PC. The idea is to streamline business practice and provide more flexibility by allowing you to access your data.

The Cloud Computing eBiz byte seminar will be led by Jon Egley. It will take place between 8.30am and 11am on Tuesday 16th October at the Ramada Grantham. It is being delivered by the Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce and is funded by Lincolnshire County Council’s onlincolnshire broadband project.

The seminar will explain what cloud computing is; how it could potentially save money and increase productivity; how to access cloud-based applications through a phone or PC; and potential cost savings.

Charlotte Baxter from the Chamber said: “This term ‘cloud computing’ has been bandied around for some time, but it can still be a bit confusing to know exactly what it is and how it works.

“One of the huge benefits of cloud computing is being able to access your data from anywhere with an Internet connection. By the end of the seminar delegates will understand what cloud computing is and how to access the cloud-based applications relevant to their businesses and reduce their ITC costs without compromising functionality and reliability.

“The seminar will look at how businesses are exploiting this technology, from email access, calendar sharing and data storage to making use of applications such as Google Apps, Dropbox, Kashflow, Saleforce.com, Live Person and Goto Meeting.

“Don’t worry if you haven’t got any technical knowledge either – that’s what the seminar is there for!”

This seminar is aimed at owners and managers of small business who want to drive down computing costs whilst using the latest technology. Only businesses based in Lincolnshire are eligible to attend the event.

The Chamber is involved in delivering the event as part of the Broadband Means Business campaign, which it is spearheading on behalf of the council along with the Federation of Small Businesses and the Institute of Directors. It is hoped the seminar can go some way towards increasing people’s understanding of the Internet and encourage more businesses to register with the onlincolnshire.org website.

All the sign-ups will eventually be used to demonstrate to commercial suppliers that there is an appetite for superfast broadband in the county.

The initiative is part of Lincolnshire County Council’s Lincolnshire Broadband Plan, which aims to bring next-generation broadband (a minimum of 24Mbps) to 90% of county premises and a guarantee of at least 2Mbps by 2015.

Spaces are allocated on a first come, first served basis and must be booked in advance. To make a booking either email Charlotte.Baxter@lincs-chamber.co.uk or call 01522 846293.
