10th December 2013

Following the opening of its award-winning restaurant, The Old Palace will be cooking up a banquet fit for a bishop on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve this year.

The small but perfectly formed restaurant initially catered solely for hotel guests but is now also open to members of the public and offers freshly prepared, locally sourced food cooked to perfection.

Although it’s only been open since August it has already been awarded the platinum dining award from Lincolnshire Today which recognises restaurants that offer an outstanding level of food and service.

Over the Christmas and New Year period The Old Palace restaurant will be offering a table d'hôte menu with two special evenings planned for Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

The Old Palace manager Sonja Brockman said guests will need to book early to avoid disappointment.

“We will be offering two unique fine dining experiences giving people the chance to enjoy a luxurious five-course dinner in our magnificent King Room which has stunning views of Lincoln Cathedral.

“Our talented and experienced chefs are passionate about creating delicious new dishes using local produce and the menu choices for Christmas and New Year are no exception.”

The five-course Christmas Day menu offers diners a choice of delicious dishes including duck rillette served with quince jelly, roasted pistachios, seasonal herb salad and apricot purée for starters followed by Lincolnshire turkey breast filled with smoked Italian pancetta, cranberries and sweet chestnuts served with a roasted sage jus.

Similarly visitors at New Year can choose from a selection of main courses such as roasted turbot served with sautéed curly kale, steamed clam with lemon grass and coconut. The five-course dinner will be accompanied by music from the hotel’s grand piano for £85 per head.

Head Chef Paul Newton draws inspiration from the classic dishes found throughout Britain, influenced by modern continental cuisine, using only the freshest seasonal ingredients sourced from nearby farms and local waters.

He said: “Lincolnshire produces more fresh food than any other county in the UK and the quality and flavour is superb. We work with as many county-based farmers, growers and producers as possible to demonstrate just what Lincolnshire has to offer.”

Notes to Editors

  • The Old Palace was built next to the site of the Lincoln Medieval Bishops’ Palace, which was the administrative centre of the largest diocese in medieval England, in three phases between 1720 and 1885.
  • The ruins of the Medieval Bishops’ Palace are separate from The Old Palace itself and are managed by English Heritage on a guardianship lease from the Diocese of Lincoln.
  • Once home to the bishops of Lincoln, The Old Palace is now a luxury hotel, restaurant and conference centre offering 32 beautifully decorated rooms in the main building and the adjacent Old Palace Lodge – a former Victorian church which recently been converted.
  • The Old Palace is one of only two Lincolnshire hotels chosen to be included in the 2013 Conde Nast Johansens Recommended Small Hotels, Inns & Restaurants Guide.
