30th July 2013

A ‘Grand Designs’ style project involving consulting engineering firm Waldeck has been awarded the prestigious New Build of The Year award for 2012 by The National Federation of Builders.

The award-winning property, in Caythorpe, Nottinghamshire, is an ultra-modern three-storey house with five bedrooms.

The design and build of the 5250 square foot property was undertaken by Nottingham based Balmoral Property and includes luxurious features such as en suite bathrooms, a dressing room, balcony, games room, cinema room within the attic and a drawing room with curved feature sliding doors.

Waldeck was appointed by Balmoral to carry out the design and detailing work on the foundations of the house, comprising a mini-pile and reinforced concrete ground beam foundation system, to support the three precast concrete floors.

Waldeck was also responsible for the supporting steel structure of the building to help support the floors, masonry structure and vaulted ceiling to the second floor.

The team also had to design and detail a curved beam and supporting post system to support the bespoke curved sliding doors.

Veronica Ruby from Waldeck said of the award: “We were delighted to work on such an interesting project as it enabled our experienced engineers to demonstrate the unique skills and capabilities we have in house, such as the fabrication of the curved beam. The fact that the project has now won such a prestigious award is testament to all those who worked on the property.”

The award was judged by a panel of independent judges from across the construction industry against the quality of finish, management of the build programme and budget, innovative and collaborative working practices and health and safety standards.

Commenting on the project Steve Catt, South-East Regional Director at the National House Building Council (NHBC), said: “The team faced some difficult challenges but were able to deliver a modern and beautifully finished house on time and to budget.”
